Historic/Restoration
Over the last 40 years Craig & Nathaniel King have experienced many different types of brick buildings. Both enjoy historic brickwork and the detailing you don't often see in modern construction design and practice. Auckland City has many historic buildings which are protected by trusts and building regulations. These are set up to help maintain New Zealand’s aged architecture. Two significant projects they have been involved in were Victoria Park Market & the Union Fish Building. Both required extended periods of careful brick repairs, brick extraction/replacement and in some cases total rebuilding of damaged areas on the buildings. A significant number of intricate detailing was undertaken including styles such as English and Flemish bond, curved arches, coins, grinding out and re-pointing amongst others.
Nathaniel says, "Walking around the city you often see where someone has not thought about the repairs needed for the damaged area of brickwork. Often modern mortars are far too strong for the bricks and should never have been used, especially on our valuable historic buildings. Owners should be made aware of the problems created by doing repairs on the cheap and seek advice from specialist architects who work in the field of historic restoration. We have worked closely with a number of Auckland’s Historic Architects and together produced some magnificent results on some of our protected buildings. Brickwork can last for many centuries if it is looked after correctly. Soft mortars are a key factor in this, how and what they are made of is significant towards protecting and preserving the actual brick itself. It would be great see more of this specialized historic restoration not only around Auckland but the rest of the country too, where our old buildings are looked after so they last for generations to come".
